Doctoral research in the department spans the period from late antiquity to the present day, and geographically ranges across Eurasia and beyond. Nelson Bennett, Ada Kök and Anastasiia Morozova all study late antiquity, whilst Julia Boechat Machado, Emilia Castelao, Marta Haiduchok and Ivana Mihaela Žimbrek work on the second half of the twentieth century.

Boris Fonarkov's newly published article explores the complexities of Eurasian imperial interactions in the seventeenth century. Centering on the diplomatic (scientific, military and ethonographic) adventures of the gloriously named Nikolai Gavrilovich Milescu-Spafariĭ and his meeting with Mongol envoys, Boris highlights "a complicated tapestry of individual interests and exchanges".

Program Published: IV Annual Graduate Workshop of Late Antique and Byzantine Studies

Co-organized by students from CEU and the University of Vienna, the workshop gives graduate students from both institutions an opportunity to present their research and get feedback from an informal and receptive audience.

Info Sessions: Advanced Certificates and Specializations

Students enrolled on MAs in the Department of Historical Studies can take Advanced Certificates, or Specializations in different areas of study. These usually involve a mandatory class or two, and attendance at some elective classes, and students receive an additional certificate upon graduation.
