Prof. Jozsef Laszlovszky, currently on sabbatical but otherwise director of our Cultural Heritage program, has been featured in an article on travelstyle.gr. Discussing the history and cultural heritage of the Matild palace in Budapest. Prof. Laszlovszky (Joska to his students) says that "the Matild Palace was one of the most important, iconic palaces in the center of Pest". It was regarded as a symbol of the 1873 merging of the three urban centers—Buda, Pest, and Óbuda—into a new city. "This rapid urban development resulted in a new large, cosmopolitan city by the end of the 19th century, with new boulevards and streets being created during this period, along with impressive public buildings and palaces."
The Mathild Palace has now been turned into a luxury hotel. According to Joska, "it represents a unique example of built heritage, as well as intangible heritage, and one of the finest examples of café house culture in Budapest."
