The Department of Historical Studies offers five MA programs and two PhD programs, all accredited in Austria and New York. Our teaching takes place in Vienna (except for archival visits and field trips).
MA in Historical Studies (One Year)
A research-oriented program is tailored to students who have already identified a research area about which they are passionate.
MA in Historical Studies (Two Year)
A systematic introduction to theories, methods, and research skills (including source languages) in a variety of historical disciplines.
MA in Museum Studies (Two Year)
A unique cooperation between Central European University and the Wien Museum, providing students with rigorous academic training in historical studies combined with practical, hands-on museum experience.
Dual Degree MA in History in the Public Sphere Vienna-Tokyo (Two Year)
Run by Central European University and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, this program focuses on the ways the past is represented, contested, and negotiated in the public sphere.
MA in Women's and Gender History, “MATILDA” (Two Year)
A two-year Erasmus program established in 2008 by six partner universities, offering students the opportunity to learn from leading interdisciplinary researchers in a cross-cultural setting.
PhD in Comparative History
Doctoral education focused on the comparison, interconnectedness, and entanglements of distinct geo-cultural regions: Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe, and the Eastern Mediterranean, in close relation to the history of other historical regions, most notably with Western Europe and the Middle East.
PhD in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern History
Doctoral education stressing methodological richness and the application of innovative research tools, emphasizing multi- and interdisciplinary comparative research.
