Source Languages at CEU

Have you been longing for a course in Arabic, or ever wondered what it would be like to speak Hebrew or finally sink your teeth into Latin or Greek? Do you need to learn any of the languages of Central, Eastern or Southeast Europe? Since 2009, we have been striving to meet the needs of the student body for less commonly taught source languages. Our goal is to contribute to the already international outlook of the university, facilitate the students' research and educational experience, and better prepare them for working and living in an increasingly globalized academic and professional world.

The Department of Historical Studies is proud to host CEU's source languages. Our courses are open free of charge to all CEU students, faculty, and staff. We offer language courses for beginners and at the intermediate level based on student needs (this can include Ancient Greek, Arabic, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Classical Syriac, Hungarian, Latin, Modern Hebrew, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Russian, Turkish, Yiddish). Advanced reading classes are offered by faculty members with relevant linguistic expertise. Every academic year, students at CEU, throughout Vienna and across the world study those languages that will best help them with their research. Furthermore, our source language teaching is an integral part of the Cluster of Excellence: EurAsian Transformations in collaboration with the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Universities of Vienna and Innsbruck.

Language students need only to follow the regular registration procedure as part of the university curriculum. For further information, please email Anastasia Theologou (theologoua@ceu.edu).
