Ottoman Empire and the Middle East

Ottoman and Middle Eastern studies at CEU focus on the social, cultural, gender, religious and intellectual history. Ottoman Studies courses range from the beginning of the empire to the emergence of the modern Turkish Republic, while Middle Eastern Studies cover the history from late antiquity to the configuration of the modern Middle East. Faculty study themes ranging from diplomatic history, religious politics and inter-communal relations, intellectual history and literature, social and political history, material culture and cultural heritage, comparative imperial structures and systems, migration, and gender dynamics. Complementary departmental expertise in Byzantine, Islamic and modern Balkan history, as well as in the history of the Romanov and Habsburg empires, enables students to pursue inquiries in both longue durée and trans-imperial perspectives.
