Cultural Exchange in the Middle Ages

The second “Cultural Exchange in the Middle Ages” summer school was hosted by Charles University in Prague from May 21-28th. Participants came from universities in Denmark and Iceland, as well as from Charles University and CEU. Over the course of the week, students attended a series of lectures themed around cultural exchange in the Middle Ages, particularly focused on how evidence for exchange is found in the matter and the text of medieval manuscripts.

The program for Urban Religious Space and its Languages is now online. This workshop is part of the EurAsian Transformations Cluster of Excellence Urban Multilingualism Workshop Series. On June 12 and 13, it will explore the languages of religion, extending attention to their spatial dimension.

Field Trip 2025: Graz, Maribor and Zagreb

This year, our academic field trip took students to Graz, Maribor and Zagreb from Monday, May 19 to Friday, May 23. During the trip, we heard presentations from faculty and students, saw many historic sites, visited museums and very much enjoyed talking to people from across the department who we might not otherwise meet.

Another Successful Departmental Retreat

Faculty and staff from the department retreated to Stift Göttweig in the Wachau last week to discuss departmental matters and the upcoming academic year. Conversations focused on the new Advanced Certificate in Cultural Heritage Studies, recruitment events for the forthcoming year, and the challenges AI presents to university life. We also formalized final details concerning the merger of the former Departments of History and Medieval Studies, particularly in regards to the examination of MA theses.
