Prof. Marcell Sebők has a new edited volume: The Beauty of Ugliness and the Ugliness of Beauty. Coedited with Anna M. Migdal, the volume aims to redefine the concept of the medieval monster by revisiting issues that have received little attention. Five essays explore disability, gendered monstrosity, disease and demons, marriage, and the debate over nature vs. nuture in medieval and post-medieval contexts.

One of the most valuable experiences I had in graduate school has been the opportunity to volunteer in the International Students of History Association (ISHA), an experience that shaped both my professional and personal growth. ISHA is the place where I managed to experiment myself in new roles and develop skills that were fundamental to my academic career, the kind of skills that you are supposed to have, but nobody tells you how to get. This is why I decided to write to the Historical Sciences Department, and tell a bit about the experience.
On Sunday, 5 January 2025, Professor František Šmahel, the prominent Czech medievalist passed away at the age of 90. We mourn in his person not only one of the greatest historians of his generation, but also a close friend of the Department of Medieval Studies at the CEU.
