Financial Aid

Global universities on the lookout for international students generally reserve their largesse for PhD studies, counting on their MA programs to generate fee-paying students. If you are looking for ways to finance MA studies abroad, keep in mind that CEU offers a wider range of financial aid opportunities available to students than most universities.

Financial Aid for admitted MA students

CEU offers a variety of degree scholarships, including tuition waivers and stipends to supplement the cost of living in Vienna. For master’s candidates who wish to apply for financial aid, guidelines are available here. Funds to support the research of MA students are also available.

The János Bak Research Fellowship board offers awards of 2000 EUR each to support study in one of the medieval tracks in Historical Studies at CEU. The funding is intended to cover part of the costs associated with studying in Vienna for any applicant with a particular interest in the medieval history of Central, East-Central and Eastern Europe. Award-winners in the 2-year program will have their awards renewed for the second year of study, subject to the successful defense of the thesis prospectus and a GPA above 3.5.

Students pursuing a one-year MA in Historical Studies are eligible for the Gerd Bucerius Scholarship.

MA students specializing in Jewish Studies may also qualify for a limited number of Jewish Studies fellowships (tuition waiver, living stipend). These students are also eligible for Jewish Studies research and travel grants.

Students in financial need may also apply for a CEU Alumni Scholarship, which can be used to supplement other financial aid packages provided by the University. If the cost of international study seems daunting, CEU is extremely competitive in keeping MA studies financially accessible to qualified students.

CEU Doctoral Scholarships

All PhD students receive funded four-year fellowships, as well as a variety of further research funding opportunities. Our doctoral students have recently received, among other examples, Go.Investigatio funding from the ÖAW, Marietta Blau grants, a Eurasia Cluster of Excellence PhD fellowship, and numerous conference grants.

We also have professional networks that create opportunities for students to receive grants for research and travel. Please consult with your supervisor or program coordinator about opportunities.
