Kharai camels, from the west coast of India, live in two different ecosytems: the mainland and mangrove islands. These remarkable animals are also the only camels that swim in the sea, crossing distances of two or three kilometers. They are also the subject of PhD student Vijay Ramchandani's research, and are included in Vienna Welt Museum's current exhibition on camels.

As a result of this, Vijay was recently interviewed regarding his research. He gave fascinating insights on the histroy and culture of the Kutch region, and in particular the role that Islam plays in the camel herders' community. Vijay is also working on the conservation of way of life of the herders and environment in which the camels life. The community preserves a complex ecosystem, which is currently under threat from conversation attempts, political tensions, and climate change.
