Emilia Castelao recieved her BA from the University of Notre Dame in History and Global Affairs in 2022. Afterwards, she went on to earn a Masters in Advanced International Studies at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Her master thesis explored chess as a cultural movement in Soviet Union and the transformation of the International Chess Federation into an institution for cultural diplomacy. Outside of her research, she works closely within the chess community as a photographer and founder of the Women in Chess Foundation. Her research at CEU continues to focus on the International Chess Federation as an institution for cultural diplomacy and the role of chess players in diplomatic spaces.
