The late Professor Henrik Birnbaum was one of the most eminent scholars of Slavic languages and literatures and the first Chair of the Academic Advisory Board of the Department of Medieval Studies of the Central European University. Professor Birnbaum was instrumental in the establishment of the Department's Doctoral Program. He regularly gave courses in the Department as a “Recurring Visiting Professor”, supervised M.A. and Ph.D. students, and participated in a number of doctoral defenses. He greatly contributed to building CEU's reputation at various scholarly forums, and to promoting students and scholars of Central Europe as members of the international academic community.

To honor his memory and devotion to the new scholarly generation of Central Europeanists, his wife Marianna D. Birnbaum, Professor Emerita of the Department of Germanic Language at the University of California, Los Angeles, decided to create a memorial fund at CEU, the Henrik Birnbaum Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Each academic year students of the following programs of the Historical Studies Department of CEU receive funding to support their participation in research projects or conferences focusing on issues of the Medieval and Renaissance periods in Europe:
