Digital Humanities (DH) encompasses a variety of methods and concepts from digitization practices to data visualizations, network and spatial analysis, as well as text processing, which are increasingly used in diverse fields and at a variety of institutions in academic research, teaching, but also in museums, libraries, and archives. In addition, the advanced certificate in DH at CEU specifically has a particular focus on language inclusivity and social diversity to cultivate a more sensitive approach to the study and usage of digital tools, methods, and datasets. This can be equally useful for students in the humanities and in the social sciences with or without prior training in DH, programming, or data science.
Program Description
The curriculum of the Advanced Certificate in Digitial Humanities is based on the principle that digital humanities is not just the application of digital tools to a specific field of study. It is instead a multidisciplinary effort that forces us to reassess the way knowledge is obtained and represented. Engaging in digital humanities scholarship requires both critical thinking about its epistemologies and understanding its technical aspects, two key skills that cannot be separated.
As such, the certificate aims
- to provide a comprehensive overview of topics and challenges of digital humanities
- to encourage critical thinking about research methods and epistemologies associated with digital humanities
- to equip students with technical skill sets necessary to engage in current digital humanities research
- to facilitate inter-disciplinary work within CEU, both for students and for faculty.
In order to achieve this interdisciplinary aim, the Certificate is co-offered with the Department of Network Science. We also foster links across the Austrian digital humanities scene, particularly as part of the CLARIAH-AT consortium and through the Digital Text Lab unit of the Cluster of Excellence Eurasian Transformations.
Courses
In 2024/25, the following digital humanities courses were offered within the department:
- Introduction to Digital Humanities: The Lifecycle of a Digital Humanities Project
- Digital Humanities Lab: Practical component for Introduction to Digital Humanities
- Palaeography and Archives in Central European History
- Topics in Digital Humanities. Data Criticism: Multilingualism, Ethics, and Social Perspectives
On top of this, sessions on digital humanities are frequently given as part of the biweekly lunchtime faculty research seminar, the doctoral research seminar, and presented at international conferences.
