This year, our academic field trip took students to Graz, Maribor and Zagreb from Monday, May 19 to Friday, May 23. During the trip, we heard presentations from faculty and students, saw many historic sites, visited museums and very much enjoyed talking to people from across the department who we might not otherwise meet.
Led by Prof. Bela Zsolt Szakacs, 30 students of historical studies (MA and PhD) and museum studies travelled south from Vienna to Graz. First, we visited the historic center of the Styrian capital, taking in the old square, cathedral and clock tower. This was followed by an evening of food, beer and wine. The following day, we split into three groups, visiting three museums in the morning. In the afternoon, we came together again to travel out to Schloss Eggenburg, to visit the Joanneum collections there.
The following day, we travelled onto Maribor, Slovenia. Here, we visited the city museum in the castle, and had a walking tour, including the world's oldest vine, and some very young swans. After that, we travelled to Zagreb, all in the same day.
In Zagreb, we visited the old town on the morning of Thursday, May 22. In the afternoon, students who wished to took a tram and a bus, then hiked up to Medvedgrad Castle. In the evening, we had a group meal with alumni. On the final day, we visited the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, and then had some time for shopping.
