The study of art history and material culture at CEU’s Department of Historical Studies is object-driven, interdisciplinary, and transnational. Faculty and students pursue research in all media with an emphasis on mediveal and renaissance Europe and Asia, as well as global contemporary art. Teaching takes place in conversation with world-class collections in Vienna and across central Europe. The Department is also involved in the CEU Visual Studies Platform that researches and teaches visual imagery in the digital century, encompasses research on visual theory, method and history across different media forms, including visual arts, film, photography, and performance.
