The Historical Studies Department’s Professor Emerita Dr. Francisca de Haan organized a panel titled Socialist Women (Re-) building Their States: An International Comparative Perspective at the European Social Science History Conference 2025, held March 26-29 and hosted by the International Institute of Social History in cooperation with Leiden University.

Students enrolled on MAs in the Department of Historical Studies can take Advanced Certificates, or Specializations in different areas of study. These usually involve a mandatory class or two, and attendance at some elective classes, and students receive an additional certificate upon graduation.

While the impact of the Christian Churches has constantly declined in Europe during the last century, overall Christianity is on the rise, and particularly in the Global South numbers of Christians are increasing. Pentecostalism and charismatic Christian movements, but also the Catholic Church, find new converts around the world, at the same time as Christianity’s previous (institutional) centers of gravity – Europe and the Near East – are either largely secularized or Muslim.
