The Circulation of Texts in the Middle Ages

In May 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus Plus Summer Course titled “The Circulation of Texts in the Middle Ages” at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. Organized by Professor Torfi H. Tulinius, this event brought together a diverse group of lecturers and students for a multifaceted exploration of medieval textual transmission. Thanks to a travel grant, I and other students from Central European University joined participants from other institutions, including Charles University and the University of Southern Denmark.

On July 19 and 20, our PhD student Bernat Racz led a short field trip to high and late medieval sites in Central Hungary. The work, in collaboration with the Kecskeméti Katona József Museum, aimed to discover material remains from communities destroyed during the Mongol and Ottoman invasions. The surveys were carried out as part of the museum’s medieval liturgical artwork research project. A significant find was made on the morning of Saturday, July 20.

Telling Byzantine History: Current Trends and New Directions

The Late Antique and Byzantine Studies Graduate Student Colloquium was pleased to host its Second Annual International Graduate Student Conference, entitled “Telling Byzantine History: Current Trends and New Directions” on Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25. The conference was held in CEU’s contemporary conference space and the University of Vienna’s historic Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik. Events at CEU were funded by the Department of Medieval Studies and the Department of History, with the Centre for Mediterranean Studies at CEU funding earlier events in the same series.
