In the conjunctions where transformation and religion meet, one of the significant factors is the influence of political and ideological changes in society. Modern state formations of the nineteenth century and a general shift towards secularization of societies under the rule of law and privatization but also deprivatization of religions in the late twentieth century are prime examples of two-way dynamics of transformations, changing due to external conditions as well as providing their own impetus for further change in other areas of society.
As follows from this cursory overview, almost every research in the study of religion must touch upon the issues of transformation, be it psychological, social, cultural, intellectual, or even natural, be it from internal or external factors to the studied phenomena. As such, transformation becomes an important concept that ought to be elaborated not only via empirical studies but also via theoretical reflections aiming to operationalize it and provide its more profound and more nuanced understanding. This conference will be devoted to this crucial aspect of religious and spiritual traditions in its full richness.
Religion in Transformation Changing the Conditions of (and by) Religiosity is co-organised by students and faculty from the Department of Historical Studies. It will be hosted by the Centre for Religious Studies, CEU from 2024 October 4-6.
