Medieval Studies explores the period between approximately 500-1500 AD and encompasses a variety of disciplines, including political, economic, social, urban, and intellectual history, as well as art history, the history of everyday life, archaeology, theology, and philosophy. While the concept of the Middle Ages was developed and is predominantly used within the European context, recent scholarship has expanded to include the "global Middle Ages," highlighting related phenomena on a much broader scale. The Department of Historical Studies boasts a uniquely strong profile in medieval studies, covering an extensive range of subfields and regions, making it a leader in this area of research and education.
