The Policy of Historic Monuments: Uses and Abuses

Historic monuments (Gothic cathedrals, Baroque palaces or Art Nouveau residences) are not only valuable architectural works, but often iconic symbols and witnesses of the past. As their maintenance requires interventions from time to time, each historic period imposes its own interpretation on monuments. In this way, historic monuments bear witness not only to their date of origin, but also to the constant reinterpretations of the centuries since, whether as a result of deliberate political propaganda or ever-changing scientific concepts. This course reviews the history of heritage conservation as a history of constant reinterpretation from antiquity to the present day.
