While the impact of the Christian Churches has constantly declined in Europe during the last century, overall Christianity is on the rise, and particularly in the Global South numbers of Christians are increasing. Pentecostalism and charismatic Christian movements, but also the Catholic Church, find new converts around the world, at the same time as Christianity’s previous (institutional) centers of gravity – Europe and the Near East – are either largely secularized or Muslim.

This website attempts to provide an overview of Global Christianities in the past and in the present: their religious foundations, their institutional settings, their histories and how they spread around the world. The resources will offer selected topics of what it means to be a Christian, the historical developments of the Christian Churches (including questions of asceticism, piety, devotion etc.) and it will situate different Christianities in today’s world.
