Independent Museum Work (Inclusion & Production)

Course Description

Students pursue their first, albeit small, own museum project based at Wien Museum either in individual projects or in group work supervised by WM staff. This exercise is meant to prepare students for the practical internship experience in the Spring term. The project will be based in the WM’s departments dealing with 1) inclusion and 2) exhibition production.

Students will work towards their small projects in two parts. In the first part of the course, students will learn how to make an exhibition as inclusive and welcoming as possible through physical structures and educational programming. They will learn techniques for multi-sensory exhibitions, inclusive educational techniques, and working with disabled communities. In the second part of the course, students will learn about exhibition planning, budgeting, communication strategy, visitors’ engagement, etc. from the perspective production. Students will prepare budgets, schedules, and learn how an exhibition is built using external art handlers, carpenters, and designers.
